steamsounds Riding behind steam
on the Settle to Carlisle line

Despite the fact that I spent most of my time in the 80s and early 90s riding behind steam on the main line, I still had time for a few lineside recordings.
The first track on this disk is of Scots Guardsman on one of its only two main line runs during its first appearance. Other notable recordings include the Midland Compound 1000 working a train single handed, lineside recordings on the S&C with 46203, 71000 & 5029 among others. The disk also has a few recordings from the West Highland line.
In total there are 27 tracks with a playing time of almost 80 minutes.

This is the first in a new series of audio CDs which will be entirely made up of my on-train recordings.
With 16 tracks and a playing time of almost 80 minutes this CD includes some of my most memorable rides on what many consider to be the premiere route in Britain for experiencing locomotive performance.
The highlights of the CD must be the last two tracks which are of complete climbs from Settle Jc. to Blea Moor and from Appleby to Ais Gill. Both remarkable runs and both with the same driver

Castles & Kings

In the years leading up to the turn of the century I travelled less and spent more time at the lineside.
Many of the 24 tracks on this disk were made on the Settle to Carlisle line and include recordings of 46203, 44767, 48151 and 60800. Even GW locos make an appearance with 6024 & 5972 working trains on the line.
In addition to the S&C, other locations including the Conway Valley and Copy Pit.
One track not to be missed is the appearance of 48151 working a freight train at Blea Moor, that's a recording I'm certainly glad I got the chance to make!

Ask a sound recordist which railway company in the UK had the noisiest engines and I can be fairly confident that the answer will be, 'The Great Western'!
This CD contains 9 tracks with a playing time of almost 80 minutes. All the tracks were recorded on-train riding behind GWR Castles and Kings on ex Great Western routes from the Welsh Marches to the South Devon banks. Great Western locos are noisy at the best of times but these recordings are among my noisiest!

Halls & Manors

Recordings on Copy Pit, round the Oldham Loop, a few on the S&C, Whalley Bank and at York are included on the 23 tracks on this disk.
Ten locos are heard including 5972, 6201, 6233, 45407, 76079, 60800 & 60009. In addition there is my only recording of 73096, recordings of 48151 & 6233 climbing Shap and 6233 is also heard climbing Beattock.

The 10 tracks on this CD include some of my best examples of on-train recordings made while riding behind GWR Halls and Manors. With a playing time of almost 80 minutes there are recordings of Halls on the Welsh Marches route, a Manor on the Cambrian Coast, a Manor footplate ride on the East Lancs Railway and a Hall and a Manor double heading on the steep climb to Hemerdon.

1 in 49!

Among the 23 tracks on this disk are some of my favourite recordings.
First among these is one of 6201 climbing Shap on a foul April day but recordings of 61264 at Hunmanby, 45407 on the Settle to Carlisle line and West Coast Main line and 76079 in Mid-Cheshire are hardly less memorable.
Also included are Flying Scotsman, Union of South Africa, a rowing boat and the risk of being mugged!

The theme of this CD of recordings from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway was suggested by one of my regular supporters who enjoys on-train recordings who wanted something with lots of noise and as the 1 in 49 gradient between Grosmont and Goathland can always be guaranteed to produce plenty of noise, the choice was easy!
On this CD you'll find 9 tracks, almost 80 minutes of sounds from 9 hard working locos on this steep climb.

46229 Duchess of Hamilton

Highlights included on this disk include the steam hauled Royal Train on the Settle to Carlisle line, my first recording on the Lickey Incline and my first main line lineside recordings of my favourite Black 5.
There are also recordings of 45407, 61264 & 71000 among the 26 tracks not forgetting a few fireworks and a run-in with the fuzz!

Back in the 1980s and early 90s there was one loco that, given the right conditions, could almost be guaranteed to produce outstanding performances every time it ventured out on the main line. That loco was Duchess of Hamilton and on this CD you'll find 7 tracks playing for almost 80 minutes featuring some of the more memorable runs that I had with this tremendous loco. As you will see, there are recordings from the S&C, a high speed climb in the Chiltern Hills, some memorable sounds from SSE runs and my own personal, unforgettable favourite, 46229's first time on Shap.

More steamsounds

The first of the 23 tracks on this disk begins with a recording that I waited a long time to make; a 10 minute recording of 45407 departing from Bradford.
In addition there are two superb recordings (even if I do say so myself!) made on the Lickey Incline of 6201 & 5690.
The same two locos are also heard on Shap and 6201 is also heard on Beattock.

2007 & 2008
With 23 tracks and a playing time of almost 80 minutes this CD includes some of my best lineside tracks from 2007 & 2008.
Included are recordings of some particularly significant steam workings including the 40th Anniversary run of 1T57, the 1968 15 Guinea special that was supposed to mark the end of main line steam in the UK and two recordings of the new A1 on its main line test runs.
It is appropriate that the final track on this disk echoes the first track on the very first disk in the series; a recording of 46115 brings this series full circle.

2009
This disk with 19 tracks and a playing time of almost 80 minutes includes some of my best lineside tracks from 2009.
The tracks start with a tremendous performance by Scots Guardsman on the Settle to Carlisle line and end with an atmospheric recording of 5690 on Gigglewick Bank. There's also a recording that I've waited years to make, drama and an 'I don't believe it!' moment at How Mill, double headed Panniers on the main line and 6233 taking over 600 tons up Shap. In short, something for everyone!
